Do One Thing: Buy Rechargeable Batteries.
Everything from remote controls to smoke detectors to flashlights to clocks use batteries that eventually run out of juice and have to be thrown away. And although batteries are considered “e-waste” and should be discarded as such, most of them end up going out with the trash. And once they are in the landfill, the insides of the batteries leach into the ground, possibly contaminating groundwater. Our solution, at least to extend the length of time the same batteries are used in our house? We invested in a battery charger and different sized rechargeable batteries, and have not had to either buy new batteries nor throw any away in over 2 years.
