Do One Thing: Unplug Everything When You Go On Vacation.
I just got back from almost 2 weeks away from home. And since I wasn’t going to be home for such a long time, I decided I didn’t want to pay for much electricity at all – so I unplugged every single thing in my house. While I normally have the power-hungry items on power strips anyway, there are a few things I leave plugged in all the time. My microwave, washing machine, cable modem, wireless router, etc.. But because no one was going to be here using any of it, I went around my house before I left and unplugged everything, including the lamps. Even if this Do One Thing only saves a few drops of energy, that’s a few more drops you don’t have to pay for and the power company doesn’t have to deliver. It’s well worth the effort if you are going to be away for a while!
OK, I did leave one thing plugged in – my DVR. Didn’t want to miss a few of my favorite shows.
