I recently wrote about the hazards of online media.

One word of caution about a decade ago, I worked for a company called Sustainable Technologies a division of Shields Environmental in the UK.

We recycled computer and telecom equipment and there are over 1000 dangerous toxins in each machine. The programs that recycle equipment have the best intentions when sending them to Asia or Africa but in the end children break them apart and expose themselves to chemicals and then the equipment leeches into the eco system.

The good news. There are organizations such as the Basel Action Network that can help you find a responsible program. There are also Manufacturer Take Back Programs and a list of not-for-profits that recycle or refurbish responsible.

Find out first and then the pass it on theory does a lot more good than harm!

There are a few places that will wipe a drive clean before disposing/recycling it. You could also buy an enclosure and use it as your own external drive.
