Do One Thing: Read This Book – “The Secret Lives Of Everyday Things”.

I don’t know if it is available at libraries or not, but however you can manage it, I would recommend you read the book “Stuff: The Secret Lives Of Everyday Things” by John C. Ryan and Alan Thein Durning. If you have ever been curious about just how much “stuff” it takes to make the “stuff” we use on a daily basis, this is the book for you. Do you have any idea what it takes to make a can of soda? I thought I knew, but I didn’t really have any idea. From the energy and chemicals used to make the high-fructose corn syrup to the Bauxite strip-mined in Australia, shipped to the US, and smelted (using the energy of a quarter can of gasoline per can) to make the aluminum to the water used, a single can of soda uses a ton of energy – before it is disposed of 15 minutes after you open it. It’s amazing to see what goes into things like our daily newspaper, our clothes, and the very computer I am typing this on. I highly recommend this book; it’s a real eye-opener and might even change some of your consumption habits.
