Thinking Outside The Green Box.
What different, wacky, strange, outside-the-box ideas do you have to help save our planet? There are hundreds of ideas thrown around in the media every day for “easy ways to go green” – but what about ways no one else might know of yet? Things you are trying at home that worked, that failed, that are still in progress? What are you working on that is different from the norm? Care to share?

I did a search yesterday for extreme ways to go green and found a few weird (if not extremely bizarre) ways that people are trying out to make a difference. Some of the things I found include:
- The Pee Outside Movement – Save millions of gallons of water a day!
- Coating Your House In Aluminum Foil – Reflects the heat back to the sun, helping to curb global warming.
- Freeganism – Freeganism is an anti-consumerist lifestyle whereby people employ alternative living strategies based on “limited participation in the conventional economy and minimal consumption of resources”. Freegans “embrace community, generosity, social concern, freedom, cooperation, and sharing in opposition to a society based on materialism, moral apathy, competition, conformity, and greed.”
- Washing Clothes By Hand – minimize soap and water usage.
I know there are mad scientists coming up with all sorts of creative ways to battle our coming climate crisis, but what about the rest of us? What are we doing other than the normal stuff? I have experimented with a solar food dehydrator, a solar oven, and a solar space heater made with aluminum cans, but not anything too crazy.
Which leads me to you guys — what’s going on in your house? Got anything the rest of us should be doing/trying out? Care to share?

I am all for peeing outside and already am a freegan. I have lived completely outside of the system, which carries a very light footprint.
Don’t know how wacky it might be deemed (at least it won’t run foul of the Environment Agency like some:), but I tend to spend most of my time thinking ABOUT the box.
Or, sometimes, what comes out of it when that ends it’s first life. How about my backpack? Some say it’s pretty rad: http://tiny.cc/aoXCY
I wash my hair with baking soda and condition with vinegar. I also use BS as deodorant. I’ve been doing this for about three months, so it doesn’t seem extreme anymore…
For the past year I have gone green and I can say that I am making a difference in world. I have influeced my co-workers, family, and friends to join me in going green. I think the ideas above are good but peeing outside may not fly with your neighbors. Do what i do, if its yellow leave it mellow.
