Many people are opposed to the establishment of ethanol biorefineries in their towns because of the air pollution they would create. According to Citizens for Clean Power, ethanol plants can release anywhere from 120 to 1,000 tons of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) every year. This could create some large-scale health problems.
At the local level, though, energy independence may be realistic… and numerous communities around the United States are exploring available renewable resources, and the technology necessary to harness them. Here’s just a handful of towns creating models for clean energy production… and good old fashioned self-reliance.
Millions of people living in nearly 600 neighborhoods across the country are breathing concentrations of toxic air pollutants that put them at a much greater risk of contracting cancer, according to new data from the Environmental Protection Agency.
“The defense and aerospace industries are lobbying the White House to prevent U.S. EPA from tightening a health advisory for a rocket-fuel chemical.” She speaks of the tax-payer funded sectors most responsible for purchasing, storing, using, and replacing the common rocket propellant “ammonium perchlorate” or “AP.” Roughly half the nation’s drinking water comes from groundwater sources, which is where rocket fuel residues tend to end up. The exposure risk of those residues is, as Sara points out, that “The chemical can inhibit the thyroid gland’s iodine uptake, interfering with fetal development.”
The Sears Tower, that bronze-black monument that forms the 110-story peak of the skyline here and stands as the tallest office building in the Western Hemisphere, will soon have another unique feature: wind turbines sprouting from its recessed rooftops high in the sky.
