Great tips. Don't forget to compost if you can. We built a space for our compost pile out of cinder blocks our landlord left behind from another project. Does the job and didn't cost us anything.

Fern, you can make fencing out of branches, old recycled wood, all kinds of things so fencing doesn't have to be expensive...just sayin...

In most parts of the country, protecting your garden from critters, whether its deer or woodchucks, is a must, and fencing is expensive.
Even chipmunks nibble at tomatoes, by the way.

Great info and I'm doing a container garden on my 3rd floor apartment! Granted the containers, earth boxes, some things cost $ to begin w/but that was one time fee. I have my Nature Mill composter (again one time expense) and I have compost going now in the laundry room so no expense on soil any more. But not even the money issue but the simple benefits of knowing exactly where my food came from and the convenience is worth it!
