Do One Thing: For Earth Day, Buy Nothing.

This week’s Do One Thing is in honor of Earth Day, and it requires no effort at all. Just don’t buy anything “extra”. The amount of waste generated around the world because of consumer habits is astounding, and in the U.S. alone the typical American family throws out 2,460 pounds of paper, 540 pounds of metals, 480 pounds of glass and 480 pounds of food scraps. All told, each of us throws away more than 1,200 pounds of trash per year, far more than people in most other countries. That’s a lot of trash! While we cannot go every day without buying anything, we can choose to go this day without buying anything other than food, should you need to, and that’s what I am doing today for Earth Day – not consuming. So if it’s not too late, do one of the best things you can do for the earth for this day!
