Do One Thing: Have Multiple Recycling Containers.

This week’s Do One Thing is from my friend Courtney over at the National Resources Defense Council – Putting one recycling bin next to each trash can in the house can really make recycling a mindless lazyman’s task. Which is great if you’re already a busy person. All you have to do is remember which bin is which (an easy thing when one bin is clear or blue and the other is a standard trash bin). Since I instituted the practice in my own apartment I’ve been surprised to find how much stuff that usually ends up in the trash can is now getting recycled. In the bathroom our recycling bin is often the first to overflow—filled with empty shampoo bottles, empty toilet paper rolls and the packaging from new toothpaste. Not every one has the time to trek up to the kitchen each time the shampoo runs out—and they shouldn’t have to. It’s also a great idea for the home office if you don’t already have a recycling bin in there—most of the trash produced is paper anyway. Recycling doesn’t have to be hard, and when you multiply the receptacles in your house, it’s a lot easier.
