Free Mass Transit For Utah Students Who Pledge To Use Alternative Transportation.

Now this is what I am talking about. How fantastic of Westminster College of Salt Lake City to offer free mass transit to any and all students & faculty who pledge to use any form of alternative transportation just 4 times a month. Talk about doing the right thing and encouraging mass transit use!

SALT LAKE CITY – Starting this fall, Westminster College will offer all students, faculty and staff unlimited access to all modes of Utah Transit Authority “UTA” transportation (TRAX, busses and Frontrunner) for free if they sign a pledge agreeing to use “alternative” transportation at least four times per month.

The only private, comprehensive liberal arts college in the state, Westminster has made continuing efforts to encourage more environmentally sensitive transportation options. On September 10, the college hosted an Alternative Transportation Day to kick off the new UTA program, as well as to educate students on the variety of non- and low-pollutant options to get around town, including the college’s new free bike rental program, alternative fuel vehicles, safe bike commuting and mass transit.

The new UTA pass program is a $1,920 value, and will be available to students, faculty and staff who strive to help reduce the college’s carbon footprint by using alternative methods of that do not require driving a car to campus. Westminster community members will have the option of purchasing the pass for $20 if they do not want to sign the pledge.

Now, if we can get every college in the country to do the same! This is really something and I hope it encourages more schools to follow their lead and be pioneers in spreading the use of mass transit.

colleges should at least stop handing out free parking permits to all students… this is just an incentive for all students to develop bad driving habits early in their adult lives. its the perfect moment to teach people how far your legs and a bike can get you!
