Is it because they don't believe it's a problem? Or because the American public is not ready to embrace a candidate running on environmental issues because the public believes it will cost them economically? Is there a candidate who will stand up and take the lead on environmental issues after elected, but is politically motivated not to do so until they are elected? No clear answers for sure. I think the best we can do is focus on who we think has the best VISION for the future regarding the environment, then hope they act on that once elected.
