Seventy-Five Ways To Conserve Water.

In what must have been an incredible writing exercise, a drought-stricken county in Georgia has come up with the biggest list of water-saving tips I have ever seen. Since everyone on planet earth could use to conserve our most precious resource, I decided to try to get the word out to people outside of Georgia! Some of my favorites from this list that I might not have thought of or written about before include:

- When washing dishes by hand, use the least amount of detergent possible. This minimizes rinse water needed.

- Don’t let water run while shaving or washing your face. Brush your teeth first while waiting for water to get hot, then wash or shave after filling the basin. You can save over 100 gallons a week.

- Microwave, steam, or use a pressure cooker to cook vegetables. It will retain more flavor and use less water than traditional boiling.

- Designate one glass for your drinking water each day or refill a water bottle. This will cut down on the number of glasses to wash. (We practice this one)

- Select the proper size pans for cooking. Large pans require more cooking water than may be necessary. (Wastes not only water, but energy as well)

- Don’t waste a toilet flush. Drop tissues and other garbage in the trash instead of flushing it and save gallons every time.

- Put food coloring in your toilet tank. If it seeps into the toilet bowl, you have a leak. It’s easy to fix, and you can save more than 600 gallons a month.

Of course, they do have some tips that I wrote about before which I do not agree with, such as:

- Use environmentally-friendly disposable/compostable plates instead of washable plates during meals. This cuts down on dishwasher runs and save water. (Come on, most people just use styrofoam and plastic - not too many people buy compostable plates).

However, any way you look at it, a list of 75 ways to save water is priceless - we need to stop using so much of it! Take a look at the list and see what else you could be doing at home or at work and put it in action. 75 Ways To Save Water.
