I think manufacturers assume (and build maintenance schedules around) 1000 miles a month. Personally, I put about 15000 miles a year on whatever I'm driving, and that's just daily commuting and the occasional road trip. We often rent cars for long trips. Over and above gasoline, there are all kinds of costs associated with operating a car that are difficult to estimate on a per-mile basis unless you keep detailed records. Often we travel with friends, and a rental can provide plenty of space for four or five people and luggage. Also, a rental for a fairly long trip is probably the best test drive you can get.
