Eco-Friendly Restaurant? Not Even Close.
I had to share this restaurant review I found at the LA Times. It is about the restaurant Abode, here in Santa Monica. They bill themselves as a sustainable, eco-friendly restaurant…their press release even said “Sourcing all of her produce from local farmers, fishers and ranchers who use sustainable practices”…However, a writer from the Times went to eat there and could not believe they were calling themselves environmentally friendly, what with all the leather inside the place, meat everywhere on the menu, and food flown in from all corners of the globe. Here is an excerpt from the article, but you have to go read the whole thing, its great:
“As I later learned, the cobia was flown from Vietnam, the Serrano ham was from Spain (of course), and though there’s perfectly good Wagyu raised in the U.S., Abode’s was flown in from Australia. The menu listed it as market price, and yes, I should have asked how much, but I never imagined it would be $75 for a 6-ounce serving. Jet fuel, I suppose, is expensive. John Dory is on the menu too — that’s flown in from New Zealand. Black cod is from Alaska, the lobster’s from Maine. Sustainable? Local?”
This can teach a valuable lesson in that just because a company says it is eco-friendly and sustainable, it most definitely does not mean that it really is. It’s kind of sad that so many companies are jumping on the green bandwagon just to make money, without actually spending the time and effort to become a little more green for real. We will not be going to eat at this place, that’s for sure.
