The Green Purchase – 100% Organic Cotton Jeans From Levi’s.

I have to say that I am as guilty as the next guy (or gal) of buying things that are not necessarily “green” or environmentally friendly. Unfortunately, a lot of things are so pricey that the average person cannot afford them. Take clothing for example – some of the green jeans I have found online can cost up to $250 if not more! So after years of buying regular old jeans from The Gap or American Eagle, I believe I have found something that I can live with….“Levi’s Eco” jeans from, well, Levi’s. I saw them online at one point and figured they would be just as expensive as other organic cotton jeans I had found, but I was wrong. We have a Levi’s store down the street from us so I walked over and tried a pair on, and they fit great. They had a few different colors for sale, but I found that the darker ones looked the best. And the best part? They were only $68, which is only a few dollars more than jeans from The Gap.

These “Levi’s Eco” jeans are made from 100% organic cotton and have an embroidered lowercase “e” in green at the bottom of one pant leg on the back. It is barely noticeable on the dark jeans I bought, but I imagine they would be more noticeable on lighter colors. The zipper and button is even recycled, and the writing on the little white Levi’s tag on the back pocket is dyed green as well.

I know what you are thinking – What good are 100% organic cotton jeans if they are still made in sweatshops around the globe? Well…I am not sure that they are yet. I sent a note to Levi’s to ask, but I have not heard back yet and doubt that I will. But I guess that organic cotton in third world countries is better for the workers than cotton filled with insecticides, no? It’s a tough thing and I am torn about this, as we all want to be responsible, but at the same time we are not made of money. So I guess we can only do the best we can.

Does anyone have any other places where they get their environmentally-friendly clothing at reasonable costs? I know that American Apparel is good for T-Shirts (if you can get past their “marketing by sex”), but if you have any other places you shop to be a Good Human, I would love to hear about them!
