While I was attempting to put together a list of the best eco-friendly cleaning products, I came across this post over at Apartment Therapy that had an interesting discussion going about which products people use that are safe for their environment. Seems most people choose to use vinegar and baking soda for a lot of cleaning! I can vouch for it though, as when my normal cleaning products (Method and Seventh Generation) don’t work on things, I always turn to vinegar and baking soda to get the tough stains out, like in the kitchen sink and the bath tub. This combo works especially well for unclogging drains. My routine is to dump a half a cup of baking soda into the drain, then pour in a half a cup of vinegar, and then plug the drain up with a rag or a drain plug. Let that sit for 10-15 minutes while you boil some water. When the water is done boiling, unclog the drain and dump the boiling water down it. This works miracles! You can then run hot water for a few minutes to clean out any extra gunk that is still there. And doing it this way you can avoid the toxic drain cleaners like Drano and the like.

Dr. Bronner Soaps
Soapworks products
Tea Tree Oil
Ecover Products
Hydrogen Peroxide (much safer than bleach and does the same thing)

Whatever you do, make sure you do not mix any ammonia and bleach, as this makes chlorine gas that could kill you or severly impair your lung function!
