I have to disagree that styrofoam and plastic are an obvious choice for the list. Polystyrene (styrofoam), is 98% air, no other product used for our food services can boast that kind of figure. Furthermore, just because a person buys goods that can biodegrade doesn't mean that they will, look at where most paper products go....landfills. Landfills are made specifically to keep air and water out (both are necessary for something to decompose). There are lots of reasons for this but one major reason is that when something decomposes chemical reactions can cause harmful gases and liquids to form. Production of reusable mugs release many more greenhouse gases (I've seen figures from 50-1000 X more). I think a deeper understanding of the subject is necessary before finalizing this list.

Michelle, you have got to be kidding me. Thats unreal. But really, for some reason, it doesnt surprise me. Most people use regular off the shelf cleaning and pesticides because they dont really know the dangers. Hard to believe though in todays day and age.

Here is something to make your hair stand on end. Today, when I was going over a list of vocabulary words with a student, he didn't recognize any of them except "pesticide", because, "We use those ALL the time at my house!"

I noticed that when I lived in Mexico, I hardly had any trash. It simply wasn't an option to buy the overpackaged stuff.

The good news about furniture is that many manufacturers use farmed rubberwood, which is better for the environment than using teak or mahogany.
