Did you know California has an SUV ban?

Me neither. But I came across this article in Slate Magazine by Andy Bowers that explains just what those signs that say “No Vehicles Over 6,000 lbs” mean. Turns out that many of the popular SUV’s on the road today fall into this category and in fact are not allowed on California roads. By law. The street that I live on has this sign, and its really only wide enough for my tiny car…never mind a giant truck. So this article was really informative, and I am wondering now after reading it how quickly the state will remove the signs. I especially enjoy the part in the article that explains how these owners will say their trucks weigh over 6,000 lbs to get the tax break, but say they weigh under 6,000 lbs when it comes down to being able to drive on the street legally.

Please be sure to read the article over at Slate Magazine. Here is a short snippet of the article:

“Unless you drive one of the largest SUVs, such as the Chevy Suburban, the Cadillac Escalade, or the Ford Excursion, I’ll bet you’ve watched them thundering down quiet residential lanes and wondered to yourself: Why is that monster allowed on this little street?

Well, here’s a surprising piece of news. It may not be. Cities throughout California – the nation’s largest car market – prohibit the heaviest SUVs on many of their residential roads. The problem is, they don’t seem to know they’ve done it.”

I bet the guy who hung the signs has an SUV.

I find this hysterical, in a sick ironic kind of way

Not around here in SM, I have seen a few of them!

If anything, the city will just take them down..no one is going to give up their school bus that they commute in..
